The 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 57th edition of the endurance race held in France. The race was won by the team of Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter, and Stanley Dickens driving the # 7 Sauber Mercedes C9. The trio covered a total distance of 5,233.232 km (3,248.454 mi) over the 24 hours of racing, setting a new distance record.
The Sauber Mercedes team managed a 1-2 finish with the # 63 car driven by Mauro Baldi, Kenny Acheson, and Gianfranco Brancatelli finishing second, just one lap behind the winning car.
The race was also notable for the debut of the Lexus brand, with the # 38 TOM'S Toyota 89C-V driven by Geoff Lees, Chris Hodgetts, and David Sears finishing 32nd overall and 8th in the C1 class.
The race saw a total of 45 entries, out of which 17 were classified as finishers. The race was marred by several accidents, including one involving the # 20 Porsche 962C driven by Price Cobb, who suffered a spectacular crash, but fortunately escaped with minor injuries.
The 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans was also the final race for the Porsche 962C, which had dominated the event since its introduction in 1984.
